Objective

The objective in WP5 is to assess the effect of the new products and eco-efficient metal production methods developed within the project on the sustainability of Europe’s mineral industry, comprising the environmental, economic and social dimensions.

Approach

The overall procedure adopted in WP5 includes a description of the current sustainability situation at selected model sites, an assessment of what change could be expected from the introduction of the new products and production methods developed in Cluster 2 (WP3 and WP4) and the refined data on mineral resources potential developed in Cluster 1 (WP1 and WP2), and finally the scaling of the results to assess the impact on the sustainability situation of Europe’s mineral industry.

Outputs

 After reviewing several sets of sustainability performance indicators, a subset of 15 indicators from the G3 sustainability reporting guidance of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI, see globalreporting.org) was selected and used to document the Baseline Sustainability Situation at the Model Sites.

 Completion of a detailed description of the Utilisation of Refined Data on Mineralisation in Support of Planning Sustainable Production of the Products Developed.

 The products associated with the respective model sites were subjected to a first round of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) screening. This preliminary environmental assessment provided necessary input also for the decision to proceed to pilot testing of the new products (see also WP3 outputs).

 Presently work is in progress on data collection and formulation of the concepts to be used in the full LCA of the new products and production methods.
